I've been asking in shops since the release basically, and then last week i went shopping with a mate, but i just couldn't be bothered to ask - i'd given up hope.
Turns out another mate of mine had gone in that very shop on that very day and bought one >_<

Why the hell didn't anticipate that their damn console would be this popular?!

Well there is an element of that but the main reason for shortages is a marketing ploy and as you can see with the wii they have sucessfully wipped up a frenzy and now everyone wants a wii, of course at some point they will have stop otherwise they won't acutually sell enough and i reckon that in the not too distant future they will arrive in bulk.[/quote]

I doubt making the Wii so very elusive is a marketing ploy entirely. They're having problems with the straps, and finding it difficult to supply retailers with enough. It wouldn't be economically viable to continue deliberately making the Wii hard to get.

Yeh, I don't think that causing there to be a national shortage of them is going to cause people to want them more... they're more likely to get ****ed off with the fact that they can't get a console and may go and buy an Xbox.

problems with straps couldnt reallybe an excuse....
dont companies have things called quality control that should have picked up onthe initial problem. and then market testing would have picked up the problem at a second stage.
personnaly i feel it is a bit of a lame excuse to aid their ploy

Well its true there are other factors but i do think it do think that we have seen examples of this sort of tactics with most of the recent consoles. And it does work i don't want to bore you with figures but the whole midnight thing and there only being so many gives the wii massive media attention at the fact that it is a rare item makes it attractive. of course there are other reasons but this have limited effect. and yes in reply to your other point nintendo and other companies have to be careful how much they employ this tactic or they simply miss the boat.

Well, if they modelled their sales on those of the Gamecube, they probably produced the correct amount. They simply did not realise just how much more popular this console would be than the Gamecube.

The straps passed QA for normal usage, and were deemed completely safe. But when people ignore warnings (as they do) and use excessive force with the Wiimote, it happens. They were used for beyond what they were designed for.
