View Full Version : Wifi for Wii
I've just had a panicked phone call from a friend. She has bought AC with Wii Speak for her daughter for xmas. Only she doesn't have a broadband connection anymore, 'cos she sent everything back to BT and went to TMobile and got a free laptop with a dongle and Web n Walk, which she says is horribly slow.
If she bought a wireless router and plugged her dongle into it would it work for wifi for the wii or am I thinking wrong. Any advice would be appreciated as she has promised her daughter this game and obviously doesn't want to disappoint.

Don't think it would Suze, not even sure a router would have a slot to plug the dongle into. I think you need a telephone connection for wifi anyhow.
Your mate might want to have a look here:

It could work it depends. Tell her to test it out.

Unfortunately the dongle will only work when attached to a PC / mac .. .. .. it is essentially a mobile phone in a USB stick. It might be possible to create a network if the lappy has a wireless network adapter that the Wii could use but chances are, and google suggests, that it won't work.
Realistically the only option is to sign up to a broadband provider and get the service resumed for her landline if she wants the Wii online but obviously that has costs attached to it.
Why did the BT stuff not work? Was it a lack of technical ability to set it all up, faulty equipment, or was it that where she lives has painfully poor broadband? Maybe she knows a friend who could help her with the setup? ;)
If you look HERE (http://www.speedtest.net/global.php?continent=3&country=4) you can find her area and see the statistics from the results of the speed tests that people have performed sorted into areas. It's not a complete list but it will give you (and her) an idea whether it's worth having broadband where she lives, and which ISP provides the better service regarding speed.

As the other guys says, this won't work. The Wii is setup so you can't even share your broadband through a computer/lappy WiFi network to get online, it must be done through a WiFi router. I know cos I've tried this out myself.
Actually we told her not to send it all back 'cos she would need it one day, but as usual she knew best. She just doesn't like BT and was also trying to save money 'cos they wanted a laptop in the house.
I think I will tell her to send the game back and just get the basic one.
What is surprising is that she lives in a posh house on a new estate and cable wasn't installed as a matter of course when the estate was built.
Anyway, thanks peoples.
Guess what! It worked!!!! My friend got a wireless router and plonked it into a room with her dongle from T Mobile plugged into it and hey presto, one wifi connection all through the house. Don't know how stable it is yet but she seems happy enough with it.

Cool Suze! I wouldn't trust it on something graphics-heavy such as online MK, but for AC it may just cut it!
I'm glad for your friend that 'some blokes off the net' got it wrong on this one :)

I won't be truly happy until I have been and set up wii speak for them but I don't know when they want it to be done.
