View Full Version : Which Console/Computer do you miss playing the most?

Updating the VC lists etc got me thinking back to when Dinosaurs still roamed the planet, and when such computers as the Acorn Electron hit the home computer market (Chuckie Egg anyone?) ;)

What computer or console has inspired you, or do you miss the most or have the greatest memories of playing? The simplicity of the C64 and the Spectrum, the platforming delights of the NES and the Master System, the adventure filled SNES and energy of the Megadrive. Handheld consoles such as the original Gameboy, maybe a bit of Tetris on the schoolbus (or at the back of the class). The overpriced 3DO, the Playstation, N64, Sega Saturn. All amazing in their own right ... Right? Not forgetting the Atari ST, the Amiga etc etc etc ....

What do you think has influenced modern gaming the most, if singularly any home system has at all?

I miss the long days of tape spooling, watching those number counters rolling upwards forever, to look up and see the US Gold screen unchanging, only staying, and laughing at you for the seventh time that morning :D

It all seems so far away from ideas of Wii 2, where maybe our brains will be truly directing the action.

I'm with you there, the start of my gaming life was with the speccy. I would love to see these games brought to the VC and surprised its not happened yet. I think Amstrad still own the rights to them??

I'll always love the Acorn Electron because it was the first computer I ever owned and was a mere eight years old :) I loved the Frogger clone 'Hopper' that came bundled with the machine. Chuckie Egg was also a highlight.

My true computing love though has to be the C64. People have seen on this forum already that I can wax lyrical about that machine all day!! I even still look at youtube videos of classic games to relive my youth lol.

Super Pipeline on the C64 - a classic!

On the Speccy the best game for me was Starglider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starglider

Have a look at this list of games and see which ones you remembers :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ZX_Spectrum_games

I'd have to say the 1st computer/console I think back to is the C64. It just sets off a thousand different memories, the people I hung around with, my old bedroom, beating my brothers up, and being beaten up in return, and loads of other stuff. Getting back from Taekwondo (can't believe I was that energetic!) and playing on International Karate, Kenny Dalglish (or whatever) Football management game, or Rockstar Ate My Hamster. Pure genius.

The next noteworthy console has to be the N64, the first one I actually bought myself, sitting down to 4-player deathmatches on Goldeneye was pure class :D Oh, and Snowboard Kids. The multiplayer, imo, was far more fun than Mario Kart 64.

i think this thread is going to inspire me to join you, Huzzellio, in digging through those old videos and stuff of some retro gaming ;) Might post some up here for the laugh.

Now then, which one do I go for?

ZX Spectrum:- Brilliant with it's rubber keys, 16Kb RAM, cassette recorder not included, but you could write your own programs with BASIC. :D

Spectrum 128K:- Now with a better keyboard plus with it's in built tape drive, no more adjusting the volume level while loading games. :p

Amiga 500:- With a 512K memory upgrade to make a whopping 1Meg of RAM, better games for it but you needed the separate disk drive to load them. :o

I think it'll have to be the ZX, all that peeking & poking (oo err missus) with BASIC must have set me on the road to where I am now working with programmable logic controllers.

Makes you feel old though, right? Lol! 8)

I can't believe how popular these old systems still are. It's incredible to see the support they're still getting :)

You're not alone on that, Karate Kid. I miss it too. Some of my favourite games came out on that console, and I'd sell my right ... leg to get them back ;)

Do you remember Sensilbe Soccer on the Amiga? Loved it, that and Kick Off. Also loved Monkey Island. There were lots of great point and click games around at that time :D

Franksta misses Sega consoles the most.

Dreamcast was a legendary end to a awesome console manufacture/game developer. Something is missing these days in the company. :(

The Dreamcast is one of those consoles I never got to play, my brother had one and it looked really cool, Shenmue was one I secretly wanted to play whilst he wasn't in. But never got the chance. I'd love to see some of those games surface on the Wii. Maybe someday ... :D

For me it was Gauntlet on the NES, that eery pipe music alone was worth the game..
Mariokarts on the SNES: 150cc...LMAO....again the iconic music..
Kirby on the SNES..
Megaman on the SNES (can't remember which one though 4 or 5 maybe)

Does anyone remember an early arcade game, 1981-1983 called
Battlezone? You looked through a periscope.
It was an early 3D game and you were in a tank..
That got me into games...
great game...

(sniffles nostalgically)

Ahhh, Battlezone :D At the time it was one of the most eye-poppingly gorgeous games ever. I think maybe time has taken it's toll on the game visually :( , but you can find a couple of screenshots of it - if you follow the link below - and a downloadable version of the game :)

Couldn't agree more with Zelda, how awesome is that game. The Ocarina of Time has to be one of my most played adventure games. Must have been through it half a dozen times :D I keep wondering whether I should perhaps download it, but I still remember where everything is on the game! Lol!

Ahhh, Lemmings!!! What a game, if only we could have an update Wii version of that classic. Ideal for the Wii remote as well.

Following a discussion in the chat room last night I've realised how much I miss the N64. Snowboard Kids, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo kazooie, DK64, Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding ... All great games with great multiplayer memories.
